History of Tamworth

A beautiful town named from its location to the River Tame in Saxon times, considered the capital of Mercia and once the largest town in the Midlands.

Once a small market town, Tamworth has seen it fair share of ups and down throughout history from being destroyed in 874 by Danish to having Europe’s first real snow indoor Ski Centre.

It is believed that Tamworth Castle was built to replace a wooden fortress to stop a Dane invasion in the 11th Century and still remains today as an important tourist attraction. The front of the Town hall has a bronze statue of Sir Robert Peel. A member parliament for Tamworth, twice Prime Minister and also remembered for his part in organising the police force.

This is merely a short statement as to the in-depth history of Tamworth.  A visit to the castle is a must to learn more.

There are many reasons to visit Tamworth and plenty of things to do. The historic Castle, Drayton Manor Park with Thomas Land, SnowDome in-door real snow ski centre, Priory Park Karting, Namco (Strykers) 10 pin Bowling, Odeon 10 Screen Cinema. Not to forget other nearby attractions such as The National Exhibition Centre (NEC), National Memorial Arboretum, Twycross Zoo, Birmingham International Airport (BHX) and East Midlands Airport (EMA) all within an approximate 20 min drive.
